Altra Torin 3 review

MEN’S  |  WOMEN’S

One of Altra’s best selling road shoes has gotten a few new upgrades. This neutral high cushion features Altra’s patented Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ toe box. Combined with the EVA midsole with A-Bound Top Layer and Inner Flex, the Torin provides a nice ride for those needs the plush feel. With a new, more breathable upper, and FootPod outsole to better map the tendons and shape of the foot, the Torin 3 continues to provide the same stack height (28mm) and soft cushion underfoot.

FIT: 4

This is one of Altra’s better fitting road shoes. The upper holds the foot well and there isn’t any heel slippage. Overall, it is quite comfortable, breathes well, and feels good on my foot. We were very impressed with the shoes fit. It is very stable and rides very well. Unlike other Altra shoes we’ve tested, the Torin is not sloppy at all, and it fits extremely well.

I wore these out of the box, with no socks, for a 10 mile run with no issues.

OUTSOLE: 3.5

Altra has introduced a new FootPod outsole to the Torin. It’s supposed to better mimic the natural placement of bones and tendons in the foot to allow for greater flexibility. Our testers had mixed feelings on whether they felt this was noticeable. Those who noticed it seemed to feel that it operated as described. The outsole held up well and was comfortable. It had good traction on most to all surfaces. The only criticism we have of the outsole is that it does not have the characteristic foot-shaped design (a very minor cosmetic issue).

Versatile shoe, perfect for road running.

UPPER: 3.75

Altra improved the upper with overlays in all the right places to improve durability. The upper is slightly more breathable, then the previous models. Some of these added features on the upper have decreased the uppers flexibility. The reinforcements on the toe box and heel increase structural, durability and support.

MIDSOLE: 4

The midsole remains unchanged. Our team was very happy about this. The midsole provides excellent comfort. They were very pleased with the cushion and also how comfortable it is overall. The Torin 3.0 was very stable and rode like a champ. Often times a shoe will sacrifice performance for cushion, but that is not the case with the Torin 3.0. The A-Bound cushioning provided a cushioned ride, without feeling soggy or unresponsive. And it held up for miles and miles with no breakdown. We are so thankful Altra did not make any changes to the midsole of the Torin 3.0.

Awesome cushioning for those looking for a smooth swift run.

PERFORMANCE: 3.9

We were very impressed with the performance of the Torin 3.0. For the amount of cushion that it has, it rides extremely well. It is the perfect balance between cushion and performance. The shoe felt very stable and we were very impressed with the overall performance. It’s comfortable, easy to run long distances in, and holds up well.

Delivered optimal performance on roads for long days.

DURABILITY: 3.8

The Torin 3 is extremely durable. The upper is materials are very durable. Each of our testers put hundreds of miles on the shoes and no major durability concerns arose. They seem to do just fine.

Bomber. The outsole, and the upper held up with minimal signs of breakdown for over 150 miles.

APPEARANCE: 3.8

Nothing too flashy here. Altra made these to look as neutral as they run.  Overall a good looking shoe. For a max cushion shoe, they do not look too clunky or over built.

A good looking shoe.

OVERALL: 3.8

Altra Torin 3.0 road version is a comfortable road training shoe for those aiming to have lots of cushion and support during their runs. The Torin 3.0 delivers a light swift run, responsive as expected for a cushioning shoe. Altra is known for their comfortable wide toe box in all of their running shoe lines. On this was no exception. Giving enough room in the toe box is essential as it avoids build up friction between toes and it helps to stay away from nasty blisters. Versatile running shoes as it can be used for running on the trails or just as an everyday shoe. The upper construction could have been better as the shoe shows some minimal but premature wear and tear on the front outside of the shoe. Heavy coated decorative plastic reinforcement in the toe box and the back heel, a good design overall, color selection was properly thought through for the female audience. If the shoe is held, it is extremely feather light weight. The height of the heel tab has just enough cushioning and it does not cause any friction if wearing low crew socks. The Altra Torin 3.0 provides an overall snug fit and well round cushioning shoe for any distance.

Thanks for the review. I’m glad I ordered the Torin 2.5 at considerable discount, since the changes made to the 3.0 don’t really see that significant for my purposes. Looking forward to giving these a go for training.

Did you have any issues with the plastic that goes directly over the big toe? Thank you. JP
