Is there a pair of shoes you would consider running an ultra in, straight out of the box? Here’s the hitch, it can’t be a model of shoes you’ve been wearing repeatedly, it has to be a model you’ve never worn.
I recently ran the White Rim Trail (100 miles) in Canyonlands National Park. At mile 35 my shoes just weren’t working for me, causing me hot spots. So I pulled a pair of Altra Timp 3s out of the box and threw them on. I haven’t worn a pair of Timps since the 1.5. I disliked the original and 1.5 versions so much I swore to never wear another pair of Timps. But circumstances as they were, I needed to try these. 65 miles later I finished the 100 miler with happy and mostly clean feet (that’s saying a lot if you saw the way the other two guys’ feet looked). The hot spots were gone, the shoes fit perfectly, and I had plenty of protection on a fairly rocky trail.
