The SmartWool PhD Run Light Elite Micro was one of the most versatile and performing socks that we have ever tested. The sock was comfortable in the cold, heat, snow, mud and dry conditions. We wore it on several runs in a variety of circumstances. It quickly became one of our favorite socks because it was always comfortable no matter what condition or terrain we were running in. In the snow, the socks kept our feet warm and fairly dry. In the heat, and on dry trails the socks felt great and our feet never got too hot. If you are looking for a versatile all purpose trail running sock we would recommend the SmartWool Phd.
SmartWool is making a solid wool sock for runners. The durability and performance have improved greatly. With these improvements comes one of the only negatives we can think of, the price. Each pair comes in at $17.95.

Pistol Pete Stoughton is an expatriate of Jersey. Never venturing far from the confines of the sidewalk, Pete slowly learned the joys of the trails in his post graduate years. Prior to an ACL surgery last year, Pete completed numerous ultra distances including a finish and preceding DNF at the Wasatch100. Some of Pete's greatest running accomplishments include a 5 minute mile at age 35 and PRs prior to his ACL surgery, and running with Dean Karnazas and the current record holder of the Fight for Air Climb (18,800' in 6 hours). Through these experiences, Pete has had the opportunity to work closely on product development and testing of companies such as Brooks, Patagonia, Merrell, Goretex and Hoka.
More importantly, Pete is a proud father of two beautiful children and happily married to an amazingly patient wife. In his spare time he is a teacher in Park City, UT and coaches the Park City High School Mtn Bike Team.
