The Fall is a great time to look at new light weight shells. The temps are getting colder and the weather uncertain. This time of year, having a full waterproof shell is a bit too much, leaving you too hot and gathering moisture inside, when it’s not quite down-pouring outside. Our team has been testing the Montbell EX Light Wind jacket over the last few weeks.
The EX Light Wind is an ultra-light jacket that will still protect you from the elements when things start to get a bit uncertain. Made of 7 denier nylon ripstop, it is durable, yet still only weighs 1.7 oz. Like many of its competitors, it packs tight and is water resistant (not waterproof). What impressed our team was the durability of the ripstop, perhaps because of the ‘Ballistic Airlight’ material Montbell uses. We ran road, trail and light bush-whacking (there were no snags) and the jacket held up fine. The EX Light Wind is a noticeable improvement over other jackets in their past line. And priced at just $89 it is one of the more affordable jackets on the market.
