Scarpa Spin Review

Scarpa Spin

Price – $130

TAUR RATED – 4.29

While Scarpa is fairly new to the trail-running shoe scene, they have been making excellent footwear for mountaineering, rock-climbing and skiing since the 1930’s.  With the Spin, they have really nailed it if you are looking for a lightweight (8.9 oz) low-profile (4 mm drop) shoe that excels on technical single-track and off-route ridge-running.

The Scarpa Spin features a high-density rock plate, Vibram Megagrip outsole and EVA midsole.  These features kept our feet protected while on the afore-mentioned crags and rocky trails, and the Vibram Megagrip outsole provided all the traction we needed when the trail was off camber or while scrambling through loose scree.  It’s welded PU upper wraps around the midfoot, creating a secure fit and eliminating any sloshing or sliding while on uneven terrain.

While on a run in the Colorado National Monument, the shoes handled smooth singletrack, rocks, ice, snow and mud with ease.  The synthetic upper breathed well, and when it warmed up and things got sloppy, they didn’t retain water, kept my feet comfortable, and maintained a snug fit 12 miles into the run. After 150+ miles, the upper has held up well, and the sole hardly looks like it’s been run on.  The only ‘downside” to the shoe is that it is fairly narrow, especially for a wide foot like mine, and with minimal cushioning, they are not the ideal shoe for the larger runner looking to head out for a long run.
