Salt Lake City offers some of the best centrally located trails in the US. There are mountains that climb 3000 to 6000 ft right out of the valley floor, just minutes from downtown. One of these is Grandeur Peak. While not one of the main 11,000+ft peaks of the Wasatch, it is a run 3000 ft climb either from Millcreek Canyon (an easy 3 miles to the top) or via the west ridge, gaining 3200ft in just 2 miles. One other alternate route is the Dragon’s Tail, a technical ridge that parallels the main west ridge climb. It offers steep trail and technical scrambling on sharp limestone. But it may also offer the most entertaining route up the mountain.
