Just a few years ago, Under Armour dabbled in the trail running world with the UA GoreTex Fat Tire. This became a niche shoe for a truly loyal audience. Branching out beyond the Fat Tire, Under Armour introduces the Horizon KTV for the Spring 2017 trail scene. This trail racer is meant to be the brand’s low weight and aggressive. Originally titled the FKT, the shoe is named the KTV.
“The upper has a great look and design and generally is average as far as comfort and fit.”
The UA Horizon KTV is built around a narrow last, or foot shape. The upper is constructed of a very durable ripstop upper with welded overlays. Initially, we were concerned about the overlays on the upper creating a rigid upper feel. After a few break-in runs, these concerns disappeared. The tongue features a bootie like construction and maintained the tongue int he appropriate spot. The toe guard has the sticky Michelin rubber over the big toe. While it works great for protecting them little piggies, it looks a little odd with the capped toe boxes. Speaking of toe boxes, the Horizon KTV is narrow. Several of the testers did not appreciate the more aggressive race fit and struggled with blisters.
“Narrower toe box than I’d prefer. The synthetic layer that covers most of the upper makes the shoe warmer than I’d like, especially running in the desert heat.”
The midsole of the KTV is a great aspect of the shoe. Constructed of EVA foam with protection, the shoe offers reasonable protection and cushioning for an aggressive shoe. It is both relatively soft and responsive.
Our testers favorite component of the KTV was the Michelin outsole. While it did wear after excessive miles, the outsole really performed. Our testers enjoyed the outsole in variable conditions and felt the traction was very good.
Be aware, this shoe is not for the faint of heart. Be it the color schemes or narrow last, the shoe has a much more Euro feel.
“The Under Armor Horizon KTV trail running shoe has a durable PU and textile upper for breathability and reliable protection. It features a Charged Cushioning foam puck under the heel for responsive comfort, and a full length EVA midsole. It has a high traction rubber lug outsole, with reinforced synthetic welding in critical areas for increased durability.”
