Just a few years ago, Under Armour dabbled in the trail running world with the UA GoreTex Fat Tire. This became a niche shoe for a truly loyal audience. Branching out beyond the Fat Tire, Under Armour introduces the Horizon RTT for the Spring 2017 trail scene. The Horizon RTT is designed for the everyday ultra runner. Much of the shoe is similar to the KTV with more emphasis on durability, structure, and support.

Some primary differences include a very different outsole and more structure to the shoe. The RTT does not use the Michelin technology, but its outsole is relatively strong.

The UA Horizon RTT is built around a relatively narrow last, and the upper is constructed of a very durable ripstop upper with welded overlays. Like the KTV, we were concerned about the overlays on the upper creating a rigid upper feel. Also in comparison, the tongue is more cushioned. The toe guard does not have the sticky Michelin rubber over the big toe but is sufficient for rock protection. While it works great for protecting them little piggies, it looks a little odd with the capped toe boxes. Speaking of toe boxes, the Horizon RTT is narrow. Many of our Ultra testers enjoyed the supportive shoe.

The RTT is surprisingly stiff at first and needs a few runs to break in. This is a solid shoe, solid as in it feels durable, like a mini tank.The midsole of the RTT is a great aspect of the shoe. Constructed of EVA foam with protection, the shoe offers reasonable protection and cushioning for an aggressive shoe. It is both relatively soft and responsive.

The Under Armor Horizon RTT trail running shoe has a durable PU and textile upper for breathability and reliable protection. It features a Charged Cushioning foam puck under the heel for responsive comfort, and a full length EVA midsole. It has a high traction rubber lug outsole, with reinforced synthetic welding in critical areas for increased durability.

“Very stiff. It felt like I was running on a 2×4. And it felt like I was going to roll my ankle at any moment if I wasn’t careful.”

Overall running in the Under Armour RTTs was good. The rock plate seemed to do its job, as it protected the runner’s foot. It provided both comfort and support. Additionally, some testers were frustrated by the heel counter but loved the outsole lugs.
