For years Salomon has been at the forefront of innovation in the trail running market. Until recently, they really offered a small variety of options for runners in the shorts category. Predominantly, their shorts offered either a compression or elite option. They’ve finally been able to provide that with the equally simply named Trail Runner Short. The Salomon Trail Short is a relaxed fitting trail running short that is light and has a conveniently located pocket system with 4 pockets along the waist and a secure zipper pocket in the back. These shorts are marketed as being a multi-purpose casual short that can be used for several activities including running. The shorts are longer than a typical trail short with a 6.5” inseam. They have a secure liner and are also breathable. They also have reflective print.
The Trail Short’s best features are the lightweight materials they’ve used and the multiple pocket systems around the waistband. Combining an elastic waistband and drawstring is our favorite for a comfortable and secure fit, and the brief was pretty spot on for the size. And for $52, they are a great everyday short to wear around on and off the trail. The pockets were able to carry quite a bit for me (keys, phone and a couple gels) without feeling bogged down or overly stuffed. The pockets weren’t super tight and had a little bounce to them, but it wasn’t excessive by any means. These shorts did run a little bit big, while one tester felt the linear was contrastingly tighter, so if you are in between sizes, definitely go with the smaller of the two.
