When compression socks and sleeves first showed up I got a pretty good laugh at people wearing them.  In the blink of an eye I did a complete 180 degree turn and wanted them.  Mostly I wanted them to help prevent calf cramping and to keep my legs warm.   I wasn’t sure about the referenced performance benefits related to using compression gear.

I ended up buying the 2XU calf compression sleeves.  The negatives first.  One,  they are not exactly easy to get on.  The best way I’ve found is to turn them inside out then pull the ankle end over the foot and get it resting around the ankle.  This can be a struggle so be prepared.  From there you can simply pull the upper part over the foot and up to the top of the calf.  The sleeves end right side facing out.  Two, I’ve found that taking them off after running is even harder.  They are wet, I’m tired and I can never get the small end over my heal; it’s a frustrating wrestling match every time.

As for the performance, I have nothing to complain about.  They keep my calves warm and have definitely helped with cramping.  I’ve read the research on the performance gains but not sure I’ve felt much gain.  I will agree to performance gains from the standpoint of warmer legs and no cramping means better running.  Although, I believe in them enough to wear them during most long runs, marathons and ultra marathons.  One additional benefit I didn’t think about before buying was the protection from cuts while I’m on the trail.

I’ve been using these or about 2 years and don’t feel noticeable difference in the material or it’s ability to compress.   I think they were $50 and I’m satisfied that I got my money’s worth now.  $25 per year depreciation seems reasonable for my budget.  They appear to have good life left so I’m money ahead now.

Overall, I support buying a pair for the reasons listed above.  I can’t think of any reason they would cause more harm than good which makes them a nice little insurance policy.
