Staying true to their roots as a builder of fine mountaineering footwear, Scarpa has put together a line of shoes that does not disappoint. While not being the most nimble feeling shoe we have worn, from the first time the Scarpa Nuetron was on our feet, it felt like a shoe that could handle long, rugged miles. It has a super aggressive tread that provides great traction in the mud, on mixed terrain, and in snow, whether fresh or crusty. While subjected to countless trips up and down rugged Grandeur Peak, the tread, upper and everything else help up beautifully, with no signs of major wear and tear. Although the toe box may be a little narrow for some, the shoe’s neutral platform was comfortable, providing a secure feeling, with no sloshiness or movement while on steep descents, although the laces were a bit thin and hard to secure at times. If you are looking for a shoe to handle long days on rugged terrain, the Scarpa Neutron is a shoe for you.
TAUR Tester Rating based on a 5 Cairn scale
“Laces are thin and light weight. They loosen but it’s okay. Sides are stable and durable.”
“This shoe has a lot of cushion and is very comfortable, although it tends to feel slightly bulky at times. I did a 20+ mile run in these and my feet were very comfortable the entire run. I would say these would work well in an ultra from a comfort/cushion standpoint.”
“Very aggressive, great traction on everything from soft and crusty snow, to steep, dry ridgeline running.”
“Although the look and feel a little bulky, they are made for all trails. They are a great all-around shoe.”
